Robinho not playing in Red Bull Arena

According to reports out of Brazil, Robinho is out about 10 days after suffering a muscle injury in his thigh during Sunday’s game against Palmeiras. Here is the list of Santos players competing in the friendly, courtesy of the team’s website:

Rafael (Goalkeeper); Fabio Costa (Goalkeeper); George Lucas (Right back); Crystian (Right back); Bruno Aguiar (Defender); Diego Monar (Defender); Luciano Castan (Defender); Wesley Santos (Left Back); Alex Sandro (Left Back); Germano (wheel); Elivelton (Volante); Alan Santos (Volante); Jefersson (Volante); Giovanni (Half); Zezinho (Half); Breitner (half); Marcel (Striker); Neymar (Striker).

Robinho’s absence would from Red Bull Arena’s opener compounds the absence of Juan Pablo Angel, who stated he won’t compete in the friendly because of a knee injury.

Santos’ other star striker—Neymar—is suspended after receiving a red card Sunday. However, he can compete in friendlies and his presence at Red Bull Arena was part of the deal.

The Red Bulls Are Finally Ready to Open the Arena of Their Dreams

The Red Bulls Are Finally Ready to Open the Arena of Their Dreams
By KEN BELSON

HARRISON, N.J. — The first thing you notice about Red Bull Arena is how big it appears from the outside. As you approach the stadium, the new home of the Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, it rises on the horizon like a giant floating silver soufflé. The stadium looks as if it could easily hold 50,000 fans, maybe more.

Its size is magnified by the enormous adjacent lots that have been cleared to make way for a series of shops and condominiums that are part of a plan to revitalize this town. The roof, which billows over the stadium, also masks what turns out to be a cozy stadium, something you recognize once you enter.

Red Bull Arena will open Saturday when the Red Bulls play the Brazilian team Santos F.C., Pelé’s old team. In many ways, the stadium, which cost about $200 million, is the antithesis of the team’s old home, Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. The new building has seats for just 25,000 fans, one-third as many as Giants Stadium, which was better suited for football. The team will play on grass, not artificial turf, and the soccer field will not become lost in a maze of faded football yard markers.

With far fewer seats, the Red Bulls will not draw the large crowds that turned out to see World Cup matches and superstars like Pelé and David Beckham. But fans will be closer to the action. There are only 17 rows of seats in the lower bowl, and the first rows are just seven yards from the sidelines. The pitch of the upper bowl is somewhat steep, but the entire field is visible from the top rows. The handful of seats that have obscured views will not be sold.

The original design for the stadium, which goes back 10 years, included 66 suites, 2,000 premium seats and a stage. When Red Bull, the Austrian maker of energy drinks, took over the stadium project in 2007, it scrapped the stage and cut the number of suites to 30 and the club seats to 750. This increased the seating capacity of the stadium by about 40 percent and helped the team keep the average ticket price at about $25.

“We’ve reversed the trend,” said Erik Stover, the team’s managing director. “We’ve taken a lot of the premium out of the stadium. We have a different philosophy.”

The stadium’s most unusual feature is its roof. Originally, it was designed to cover one side of the stands. Now, it wraps around the entire stadium and covers all the seats, while leaving the field exposed to the elements.

The 60 feet of roof that covers the lower bowl is translucent to allow in sunlight. The rest of the roof is metal, so the seats in the upper bowl feel darker and cooler. Of course, fans may welcome the shade on hot days.

The lack of direct sunlight may also prevent the aluminum used in the upper bowl from heating up in the sun. While the lower bowl is made of precast concrete, the team chose metal for the upper bowl so fans could create more noise when they stamped their feet.

The stadium’s smaller dimensions and the roof should make Red Bull Arena a place that soccer fans can finally call their own.

But unlike, say, the new Yankee Stadium, the average fan is not smothered in luxuries. The club suites are fancy enough, but fans in most of the stadium will have access to concession stands on one concourse. From there, fans can see the field but will be encouraged to return to their seats. The team has hired Seabra, which runs Portuguese supermarkets and restaurants in Newark, to help select the food.

Soccer does not seem to generate as many statistics as other sports, so fans may not mind that the scoreboards hanging above the end zones are relatively small. The four-foot-high screen that wraps around the middle of the stadium is more visible, though undoubtedly it will include a lot of advertising.

The stadium does not appear to have a lot of garish signage. That may be a sign of the weak economy or perhaps the team’s focus on the game. The team’s owners, though, are not shy about pumping their brand: vending machines that sell Red Bull will be placed throughout the stadium.

The real drawbacks are outside the stadium. The Harrison PATH station is less than a 10-minute walk, and the station is being renovated. Access to highways will take some navigation and patience.

The nearest restaurant is another 10 minutes away. Better to work or ride one stop on the PATH to Newark, where the Ironbound neighborhood has a large Portuguese and Brazilian population and many restaurants that televise soccer games.

RBNY to Use RFID at the Turnstiles

Thousands of soccer fans passing through the turnstiles at Red Bull Arena will never hear these words: “Tickets, please.”

That is because the Red Bulls of Major League Soccer will use a paperless ticketing/admission/concession system when it opens its new stadium next month, in Harrison, N.J.

The system is sold by Fortress GB, a company based in London that has sold similar systems to teams like Arsenal and Manchester City, and is used in stadiums like Wembley in London and the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein, South Africa, which will be used for this summer’s World Cup. The Red Bulls will be the first professional sports team in the United States to use it, said Erik Stover, the team’s managing director.

Red Bulls season-ticket holders, of which the club said there are now more than 6,500, will be issued smart cards (using RFID or radio-frequency identification) that will activate turnstiles at the team’s new stadium. In addition, season-ticket holders will be able to load the cards with money (at the Red Bulls’ Web site), which will expedite purchases at stadium concession stands. Season-ticket holders can assign their tickets to third parties, who will receive an e-mail message and then be able to print out the tickets.

“From the Red Bulls’ point of view, this is the future of sport in North America,” Stover said. “In 5 to 10 years very few teams won’t be using this system. If you look at it from the customer’s point of view, there’s a lot of convenience — they can enter the facility faster, it speeds up lines and makes it easy to transfer tickets, and it’s all done online. It’s very convenient and powerful.”

In an article on sportsbusinessdaily.com, Chris Tsakalakis, the president of StubHub, a ticket reseller, said that people often discussed the virtues of paperless ticketing but not the drawbacks: the erosion of fan rights and the elimination of resale competition. But a Red Bulls ticket representative said season-ticket holders would still be able to print tickets and sell them through third-party resellers.

The team’s goal is to one day be ticketless, but that would, of course, require a building full of season-ticket holders. That, however, is the situation in London where Arsenal uses the Fortress GB system at its new Emirates Stadium. With most of the 60,000-plus fans who attend home games season-ticket holders, the Gunners offer other fans the opportunity to join a club (which now numbers more than 200,000) and receive a smart card for purchases in the stadium. In addition, the club membership provides the club a means to communicate with those fans, offering them tickets to non-Premier League matches, like the F.A. Cup and the Carling Cup.

“Most pro teams know who season-ticket holders are and who’s on their waiting list, but that’s it,” Stover said. “Season-ticket holders pass off tickets at a pretty high rate, even in the N.F.L. So the teams don’t know anything about those people. This system allows us to communicate with those people directly.”

The club also plans to offer the users of the smart card various premiums, like discounts at the concession stands that can be sent to fans via text messages and exclusive autograph sessions with Red Bulls player.

“I think the most important thing is that this system allows us to communicate more effectively with the consumer, learn what they prefer so we can adapt — it’s almost a subconscious level of communication,” Stover said.

Stover said the club would send its season-ticket holders their packages over the next two weeks. It will include a CD with instructions for getting started. The Red Bulls will test the Fortress system at the stadium’s soft opening on March 13 when the club’s under-18 academy team plays the United States under-17 national team at the 25,000-seat stadium. The club will host Santos of Brazil on March 20, then is scheduled to play the first M.L.S. match in the building, against the Chicago Fire, on March 27.

The Red Bulls announced today that it has waived goalkeeper Danny Cepero and defenders Carlos Johnson and Walter Garcia. The team also did not pick up midfielder Matthew Mbuta’s option.

Cepero was with the Red Bulls for three seasons after being drafted in the fourth round (46th overall) in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft out of the University of Pennsylvania. Cepero made 13 starts for New York in 2009, earning a 1.74 goals against average and a 2-8-3 record.
Johnson joined the Red Bulls from Norway’s Bryne FK before the start of the MLS season in March and appeared in 13 matches, tallying one assist. Garcia signed with New York last August from Argentina’s Quilmes Atletico Club. He appeared in one game in 2009.

Backe’s first impression: We’re out of shape and uncreative

The Red Bulls must have been sucking wind in La Manga, because some of the first words Monday from coach Hans Backe were unprompted criticisms aimed at conditioning.

“ One thing is for sure the fitness level has to improve a lot, a lot, a lot,” he said. “That’s for sure.”

The MLS off-season is longer than what Backe is accustomed to in Europe and, for that reason, he admits the team’s two-week training camp in Spain wasn’t a fair assessment. But even though the Red Bulls pulled out good results in their three exhibitions, the Swedish coach saw enough to know something was missing, something Red Bull fans have noticed since Amado Guevara was traded and Claudio Reyna fizzled.

“We have some key players who can make a difference,” Backe said. “But I’d say we need a couple more who can make a difference with the team.

“I want to play my type of style in the future, and we need to bring players in, that’s for sure, to become a team that can win anything in the U.S.”

What kind of players?

“Creative players. Attacking players.”

Old or young?

“We need some established players, some creative top class player, for example in the midfield position, who can control the game, who can make the difference, who can feed the strikers, who knows the type of play we want. So that can be a player over 30.”

That also sounds like an expensive player.

“Not if you have the right connections.”

General manager Erik Soler also shed some light on the subject, and it appears he’s targeted a veteran midfielder for a non-designated player slot—one who doesn’t come with a transfer fee, who has already been contacted, and who he wants to sign before the opener on March 27.

Soler, who said he’s “in discussions with a number of attacking and midfield players,” admitted that he had these signings in mind when he traded away the No. 1 allocation slot to the Philadelphia Union for allocation money.

Tactically, he and Backe devoted much of their time in La Manga on defensive organization, and it appears they’re prepared to move forward with the current crop of defenders—including newly-signed Roy Miller.

Offensively, however, they’ve posted a “Help Wanted” sign. It’s no surprise given the departure of Albert Celades and Jorge Rojas, and the inexperience that follows on the depth chart.
“We are searching for an experienced guy with that (attacking) ability, which I think the team needs, one that can control the situation for us game after game—if we are under pressure, if we are not under pressure,” Soler said. “I don’t think we have that kind of player at the moment.”

Soler also took a jab at the Red Bulls’ fitness level.

“They’ve had a long holiday,” he said. “They will not have that in the future.”

NOTES: Soler said the Red Bulls will hold off on signing a designated player until after the World Cup. …Estonian midfielder Joel Lindpere has signed with the club and is only awaiting paperwork. …Dane Richards, who impressed Backe in La Manga with his speed, is training with the Jamaican national team for an exhibition against Argentina. … First-round draft pick Tony Tchani joins the team on Tuesday. ...Backe highlighted the performances of rookie Tim Ream, who “was very calm on the ball in the way of a European center back—very precise in his passing game.”

Red Bulls drop Lech Poznan, 1-0

LA MANGA, SPAIN- Forward Juan Pablo Angel's first half goal and a stout defensive effort propelled the New York Red Bulls to their first win of the year with a 1-0 victory over Poland's Lech Poznan at the La Manga Resort in La Manga, Spain. New York improved to 1-0-1 during its first preseason trip of the year. Exclusive post-game reaction will be posted on the team's Official Blog, Red Bulls Reader, at www.redbullsreader.com later today.
Lech Poznan controlled possession for the first part of the match, but both teams did not have many chances in the opening half an hour. Poznan's Sergei Krivets curled the ball around the Red Bulls' wall on a 23-yard free kick in the 32nd minute, but it was caught easily by trialist goalkeeper Greg Sutton. On the other end, New York rookie Conor Chinn nearly got on the end of a Danleigh Borman pass that was gobbled up by Poznan goalkeeper Krzysztof Kotorowski.

With six minutes until the break, New York generated its best chance up to that point. Angel gathered the ball in the midfield and strung a pass to an on-rushing Dane Richards, whose shot on target was blocked by Kotorowski.

The Red Bulls took the lead moments later. On a counterattack, midfielder Jeremy Hall found Angel at the top of the penalty box. Angel took a touch before lashing a low, right-footed shot past Kotorowski and inside the far post for his first goal of the year. Poznan nearly equalized off the restart, as Bartosz Bosacki nodded a cross high.

In the 82nd minute, the Polish side had its best chance of the day to score. Bortosz Berescynski found space in the box and rifled an on-target shot across the face of goal that a fully extended Bill Gaudette poked away. In second half stoppage time, a Berescynski header went straight at Gaudette in the game's final scoring opportunity.

New York completes its match schedule in Spain on Feb. 1 when it takes on Norway's Stromsgodset IF. The team is expected to return to the United States on Feb. 4.

New York Red Bulls vs CSKA Moscow in Aliante Spain

ALICANTE, SPAIN– The New York Red Bulls played their first match of the 2010 preseason against CSKA Moscow at a wet Campoamour Resort in Alicante, Spain. It was the first match under the direction of new head coach Hans Backe, and the club performed well, playing to a 1-1 draw against the Russian UEFA Champions League side.

Red Bulls midfielder Dane Richards scored the first goal of the 2010 season just six minutes into the match when he took control of a misplayed ball by the CSKA backline and sprinted in alone and beat goalkeeper Chepchugov with a low shot to the left side. Red Bulls captain Juan Pablo Angel took a pass from rookie midfielder Austin da Luz and turned and fired a diagonal ball from 30 yards out at the CSKA defense that was controlled by Stoliarenko, but his back pass was intercepted by Richards.

“It was a good game for us,” said Backe. “They are a real high profile team. I am very happy with our performance and our defending. Overall, it was a good match. We’ve only practiced for 8-10 sessions. Our defense was excellent. You have to be good defending to survive.”

“It’s the beginning of the exercises we’re doing here,” said Red Bulls captain Juan Pablo Angel. “It was nice to get a match against a good side. (Hans) had been focusing mainly on the shape of the team. I think we did an excellent job. The things that he told us to do, I think we did exceptionally well. There is still work to be done. But, overall I am pleased with our performance and the shape of the team.”

The Red Bulls had a number of other chances in the opening 45 minutes, including two corner kick opportunities in the 17th and 18th minutes and a Conor Chinn tally that was ruled offsides.

The Red Bulls made six substitutions to start the second half. CSKA came out quickly pressuring the Red Bulls back line and finally put one through when Zabolotniy sent in a left side cross that Tomas Necid handled and fired at trialist goalkeeper Bill Gaudette. Gaudette made the save on the shot from just two yards out, but Necid cleaned up the rebound to level the match at 1-1 in the 49th minute.

Richards, who was subbed back in the 67th minute for Angel, had a chance to give New York the victory with five minutes remaining when he split the midfield and sent a pass wide left to Jeremy Hall. Hall gathered the ball and sent it back to Richards in the middle. But, Richards’ shot sailed over the crossbar from inside the area.

CSKA pressured New York in the second half, sending a number of shots in, but Gaudette was up to the task as the match finished in a draw.

New York is back in action on Wednesday at La Manga, when it faces Polish side Lech Poznan.
"We consider that Chris has the potential to again be one of the top right backs in MLS. His resume of winning three MLS Cups and playing for the U.S. Men's National Team speaks for itself and we are confident that he can provide leadership and ability to our back line," said Red Bull New York Sporting Director and General Manager Erik Soler.

Albright, who was acquired by the Revolution on Jan. 18, 2008 from the Los Angeles Galaxy in exchange for allocation money, is an experienced veteran in Major League Soccer, winning three MLS Cup titles with D.C. United in 1999 and the Galaxy in 2002 and 2005. In 2009, the three-time MLS All-Star started in one game in April before missing the rest of the season due to left knee injuries. Albright underwent meniscus surgery on April 22.

In his first year for New England, Albright set new career highs by starting and appearing in 26 of 30 games. The 31-year-old made 32 appearances in all competitions and helped New England win the 2008 SuperLiga, scoring the winning penalty kick.

Prior to joining New England, Albright spent six seasons with Los Angeles, accumulating seven goals and 18 assists in 111 regular season appearances. While with the Galaxy, Albright, who has earned 22 caps for the U.S. Men's National Team, was selected for the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad. The Galaxy acquired the Philadelphia, PA native and a second-round selection (24th overall) in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft from D.C. United in exchange for Los Angeles' first and second round 2002 MLS SuperDraft picks and a 2003 conditional SuperDraft pick.

Albright started his MLS career with D.C. United in 1999 and made 56 appearances over three seasons. After he was allocated to the Miami Fusion as a Nike Project-40 player, he was traded, along with John Maessner, to United for Brian Kamler. Albright attended the University of Virginia between 1997-98.

Soccer-Red Bull New York appoint Swedish coach Backe

NEW YORK, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Major League Soccer's Red Bull New York have appointed experienced Swede Hans Backe as head coach, the club's general manager said on Thursday.

Backe won four Danish titles in charge of FC Copenhagen and Aalborg and most recently was assistant to compatriot and former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson with Manchester City, Mexico and English League Two (fourth division) side Notts County.

New York will have a distinctly Scandinavian feel when they kick off in March at their newly-built stadium in New Jersey with 57-year-old Backe working alongside general manager and sporting director Erik Soler who is Norwegian.

Red Bull assistant coach Richie Williams and goalkeeping coach Des McAleenan will continue in their roles.

"I have followed Hans's career for many years and I think he will be an excellent coach for this team," said Soler.

"Hans brings a vast amount of experience from a variety of different clubs in Europe and he has been a fantastic mentor for many young and established players.

"We are confident that he will be able to help our club accomplish our goal of competing for an MLS Cup."

"I am pleased that Richie Williams and Des McAleenan will remain with the club," Soler added. "They are both important to the success of the organisation with their depth of player and league knowledge."

"I am extremely excited to join the Red Bulls," Backe said.

"It is evident with the stadium and the resources available that Red Bull is very committed to making this club the best in Major League Soccer. I hope that I can bring my expertise to the club and build a winning squad for our supporters."

The Austrian Red Bull energy drink company took over the club in 2006 when it was known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

Last season the team failed to make the playoffs and head coach Juan Carlos Osorio quit before the end of the campaign with American Williams taking charge for the final games.

The Red Bulls have signed Costa Rican National Team player Roy Miller

The Post still isn’t sure exactly who is calling the personnel shots for New York, but did confirm the move through a league source. It was first reported by Costa Rican publication La Nacion, and is expected to be a two-year deal.

The 25-year-old Miller had signed a three-year deal last season, and it's still unclear if these next two season are a loan or a permanent move.

Miller is a National Teammate of Red Bull right back Carlos Johnson, having earned a dozen caps. He has played played left wing and centerback, but has been playing at left back on the club level.

With Norwegian Erik Soler having taken over as sporting director, this signing does seem to be up his alley. Miller comes on loan from Rosenborg in Norway, and he has been playing in Scandinavia since 2005. He played 2 1/2 years for Bodo/Glimt in the second division and helped them gain promotion. Last February he made the jump to Rosenborg _ arguably the best team in Scandinavia the past 15 years _ and eventually went on loan to Orgryte in Sweden. And Miller's Rosenborg teammate was Steffan Iversen, who was represented by Soler. Just connecting the dots is all...

The 6-foot-1 Miller was reportedly going to sign with expansion Seattle last season, but didn’t only because he couldn’t get health insurance in the U.S. for his then-pregnant girlfriend. He's expected to report Jan. 11.

GM Soler has plate full with Red Bulls

GM Soler has plate full with Red Bulls
First order of business for sporting director is hiring new manager

Erik Soler was formally introduced as the new general manager and sporting director for the New York Red Bulls at a press luncheon at the team's offices Monday afternoon. And the Norwegian has plenty on his plate to keep himself busy.
The Red Bulls are coming off one of the worst seasons in their history, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2002. Soler is a man who likes a challenge and he certainly found one in New York.

"I saw that [the Red Bulls] were not the top team, I think that was one point that attracted me," Soler said. "The second point is that I believe this area must be a great possibility to build a soccer base here. It's a great area, lot of people, a lot of soccer interest."

Soler, 49, said he has limited knowledge of Major League Soccer, but does have an extensive background in the sport, as a player, agent, broadcaster and executive.

But Soler isn't complete devoid of MLS knowledge. Before going on to score the winning penalty in the MLS Cup for Real Salt Lake, Robbie Russell was signed out of college by Soler to play at his club, IK Start. Other former MLS players followed, including former Red Bulls defender Hunter Freeman and FC Dallas defender Clarence Goodson.

Soler also has a pre-existing relationship with soccer agent Lyle Yorks, who he hired to work at International Sports Management Group, where he served as CEO until 2000 until he sold the company to Proactive Sports.

"Of course I'm not going to claim I'm an MLS expert," he said. "I've become a generalist in football. I'm an expert in European soccer, but I think I have a sensible ability to learn things quite quickly. The most important thing, of course, is to understand more in the coming weeks and months and also build a good team around me that has all the knowledge."

One of Soler's first orders of business is to hire a new coach. He said Richie Williams, who was 3-3-2 as the interim coach last year after Juan Carlos Osorio resigned, is a candidate.

"I met him 10 years ago at a national team game in Tampa or somewhere in Florida," Soler said of Williams. "I spent some time with him and I saw what he did here last year. I think that was good. He's been here four years, that's also an asset. Hopefully we'll include him in one of the positions, but what position is not finalized."

Published reports in Europe have linked former Arsenal midfielder Tony Adams as a coaching candidate, but Soler wouldn't mention any other names.

"We are really at the moment very open minded," he said. "We are looking at different names, different places within the U.S., outside the U.S. It's going to go on for a while, until we find the right candidate."

Though he said he could go either way at this moment, Soler wouldn't rule out a foreign coach just because of the failed history of coaches without coaching experience in North America or MLS.

"It's an important point," he said. "But people would never do anything new if they always did what people have already done."

Soler admitted to not knowing much about the current Red Bulls roster, but said he plans on studying the team and its players by watching numerous DVDs in the near future. As for the possibility of adding a second designated player in the upcoming season, Soler said that is a priority, although declined to mention possible targets, only saying it would be an attacking player.

"If you have to spend some serious money on something," Soler said, "it would be someone who is in the offensive ballpark."

Soler's vision for the Red Bulls is to put an attractive team on the field, one that plays attacking soccer at home and, of course, wins games. The goal, he said, is to fill Red Bull Arena on a weekly basis.

"Soccer is about filling the stadiums and to fill the stadiums you have to play the type of soccer people like, you have to attract people with some good players they like to watch," he said. "There are millions of things you have to do with the team and the organization to be able to produce what people like to watch."

Reports link Zenga to Red Bulls

The New York Red Bulls coaching search has long been believed to involve two types of coaches: ones with MLS experience and foreign coaches. There now appears to be a candidate who fits both descriptions. That man is Walter Zenga.

The former New England Revolution goalkeeper and head coach has fashioned a modest coaching career in Italy, having enjoyed a good run with Catania before taking a more high-profile job with Palermo. He was recently let go by Palermo and is now being linked to the Red Bulls job.

(UPDATE-SBI has been learned that Zenga has NOT spoken with the Red Bulls about their coaching vacancy, but he IS interested in returning to coach in MLS. What does this mean? You can expect a Zenga-Red Bulls meeting to happen, unless Red Bulls GM Erik Soler is already closing in on one of the European-based candidates he is supposedly eyeing.)
The BIG EAST and Red Bull New York will join forces with a three-year partnership for the Conference’s men’s soccer championship to be held at the new state-of-the-art Red Bull Arena through the 2012 tournament, it was announced today. With the BIG EAST being a power conference in soccer and Red Bull Arena positioned to be the best soccer-specific-stadium in the US, this seems to RBR to be a great pairing. And with several Red Bull Academy products continuing to play at several BIG EAST schools, it is possible that the next BIG EAST Championship could feature Red Bull products in Red Bull Arena.

New York Red Bulls Offer Rafael Marquez Barcelona Alternative

The American outfit hope to attract the Barca star, who is reportedly unsettled by the length of time it is taking him to secure his future in Spain...

Barcelona face competition to keep Rafael Marquez at the club after it was revealed that New York Red Bulls are ready to offer him a contract in January.

The Mexican international's current deal at Camp Nouruns out at the end of the season and the MLS giants are keen to add his experience to their ranks for the new season.

Marquez has always insisted that his first choice would be to stay at Barcelona, but if the Catalan club continue to drag their heels he could well be tempted to move across the Pond.

Barca have already seen several stars, such as Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta and Eric Abidal pen new agreements, and hope to add the central defender to that list.

But as negotiations drag on, other clubs have started to show an interest, and La Vanguardia believe that Marquez knows what he could earn should he choose the Red Bulls.

The 30-year-old joined Barcelona in 2003 after spending four years in France with Monaco. He has been key to the club's success in the past six seasons.

Åge Hareide is on his coaching shortlist

Erik Soler announced on a Champions League broadcast today that he has been hired as the sporting director for Red Bull New York.

Soler _ capped 39 times for Norway _ played for Lillestrøm and Brann in his home country, and also was a standout at Hamburger SV. It was from his time at the Bundesliga club that he became friends with Dietmar Beiersdorfer, now the sporting director for all of Red Bull soccer. Now, media outlets in Norway claim he's headed to New York to work for his old buddy and that ex-Norwegian national team coach Åge Hareide is on his coaching shortlist.

Hareide had a so-so stint as a national team coach, but has been nothing but a winner on the club level. He has won league titles in three different European countrie: Norway, Denmark and Sweden. (Trond Sollied and Sven-Göran Eriksson have each won three, while Ernst Happel and Giovanni Trapattoni have won in four) He's been with Örgryte IS and is linked to jobs all over Scandanavia, but who knows?

Soler, on the other hand, appears a fait accompli. He was at one time an agent, representing Steffen Iversen and Erik Mykland; but by 2003 he clearly had made enough coin to quit his day job and become co-owner and board leader of IK Start, the same team that signed right back Hunter Freeman away from Red Bull. For the past few years he has also served as a TV commentator in Norway.

Do you think his direct link to Beiersdorfer will cut out the red tape? Oer is in old boys network?

Nick Zimmerman selected by Philadelphia in expansion draft

New York Red Bulls midfielder Nick Zimmerman was selected by Philadelphia Union in the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft today.

Zimmerman, 22, was the Red Bulls third round pick (44th overall) in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft. The Tampa Bay, Florida, native appeared in 11 matches this past season, making seven starts and logging 757 minutes.

Zimmerman was one of 12 players left unprotected by the Red Bulls in this year’s Expansion Draft. Each team was allowed to protect 11 players on their roster. Philadelphia, MLS’s 16th team, was allowed to select 10 players today, but could only choose one from each team’s unprotected list.

The players selected are as follows:
Jordan Harvey, Colorado Rapids
Andrew Jacobson, D.C. United
Brad Knighton, New England Revolution
Sebastien Le Toux, Seattle Sounders FC
Stefani Miglioranzi	, LA Galaxy
Alejandro Moreno, Columbus Crew
Dave Myrie, Chicago Fire
Shea Salinas, San Jose Earthquakes
Shavar Thomas, Chivas USA
Nick Zimmerman, New York Red Bulls

What are your thoughts on the players Philly selected? Did they make any glaring errors? How do you think they will supplement these picks with transfers or at the draft?

Erik Soler new sportdirector

Im a norwegian living in LA. I am mostly following the Galaxy. But I am surprised and happy about this signing.

Its confirmed that this is your new chief;-)

Who is Erik Soler?

-He is a FORMER owner of Start. The club filed for bankrupcy last year and Soler lost the club and a lot of money, and the bank took over the club. His buddy Ravnaas now owns the club, but now its possible the club is going to file bankrupcy once again. I have seen several amaerican articles that says he is owner of this club, thats false.
-He had nothing to do with transfer of Costa Rica international Bolanos. He lost the club in 2008. Bolanos signed in 2009.
-He took up his agentbusiness this summer. In the beginning of 2000 he sold players like Steffen Iversen to Tottenham Hotspur, Erik Mykland to 1860 München.
-He has strong connections to some big names in the football world. He is a friend of Felix Magath(former coach and winner of Bundesliga with Wolfsburg and Bayern München).
-He was voted most sexy man in Norway in the 80s
-Currently a host of Champions League football on norwegian television
-He is a very free speaking person. One of the most powerful persons in norwegian soccer, with very strong ties to german soccer. Mainly because he played for Hamburg. He is a friend of Beiersdorfer. They played together in Hamburg.

I am quite sure the Bulls fans will love him. He is very ambitous. Maybe in many ways to ambitous. But he is funny and charismatic, and wont be very anonymous.

Expansion Draft Protected List Released

The protected players list for the upcoming MLS Expansion Draft were released by the league office today, and here are the 11 players the Red Bulls elected to protect heading into Wednesday’s expansion draft (CLICK HERE FOR EXPANSION DRAFT RULES):

Juan Pablo Angel
Danleigh Borman
Bouna Coundoul
Kevin Goldtwaite
Jeremy Hall
Carlos Johnson
Macoumba Kandji
Carlos Mendes
Ernst Oebster
Dane Richards
Seth Stammler

What are your thoughts on the protected list? Being that the Red Bulls can only lose one player to the draft, and five teams won’t lose ANY players (there are 10 rounds to the draft and you can’t lose more than one player) we imagine that there were some tactical moves made in the players left exposed. Do you see Philly selected a Red Bull? Who do you fear getting picked the most? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Expansion Draft set for November 25

The date for the MLS Expansion Draft has been announced, and Wednesday, November 25 will be the date. On that day, the first 10 members of the Philadelphia Union will be selected, as 10 MLS players will be moving to the City of "Brotherly Love" for Thanksgiving. The rules for the draft are after the jump, but RBR would like to hear from you guys on who you would protect if you were running the team. Share your thoughts in the comments section.

2009 MLS Expansion Draft Rules

Senior Roster

Teams may protect 11 players between their Senior and their Developmental Roster.

If the Player’s contract expires at the end of 2009, he will still be considered part of the Team’s Senior Roster.

If a Team protects a player, it is not obligated to exercise the player’s option. It may renegotiate a new budget number for the player as in previous years.
If a player retires, he will not be a part of the Senior Roster, but his Team will lose its right of first refusal to him should he ultimately decide to play.

Developmental Roster

Players on a Team’s Developmental Roster, other than Generation adidas players who have not been graduated at the end of the 2009 season and Home Grown Players, will be part of the expansion draft.
Generation adidas players (who have not been graduated at the end of the 2009 season) and Home Grown players are automatically protected (teams do not have to use a protected slot on them)If Philadelphia selects a Developmental Player it must offer him a Senior Roster position and he must be on Philadelphia’s Senior Roster as of Roster Compliance Date.

International Players

Teams are restricted in the number of International player(s) that they may make available per the table set forth below.
For purposes of this expansion process, for US-based teams, any non-domestic US player would count as an International and for Toronto FC, any non-domestic US player or non-domestic Canadian player would count as an International.

Designated Players

Designated Players do not have to be protected unless the player has a no trade clause in which case he must be protected.

Maximum Player Loss

Once a player has been claimed from a Team’s non-protected roster, that team is eliminated from the expansion draft and may not lose any further players.

Right to Renegotiate

Philadelphia will have the right to renegotiate a drafted player’s salary (either up or down) without having to place such player on waivers or giving his previous Team a right of first refusal.

Priority

On the first day of the Discovery/Allocation Period, Philadelphia will have priority over players who played professionally in the USL First or Second Division in 2009, subject to another MLS team’s right of first refusal.

Rounds

The expansion draft will be 10 rounds.

INTERNATIONAL PLAYER PROTECTION REQUIREMENT TABLE:

Teams may make available a number of international players equal to their total number of international players minus 3, provided that if a team has 3 or less international players it may make available not more than 1.

SECAUCUS, NJ- The 360-degree roof at Red Bull Arena - the New York Red Bulls' future home in Harrison, NJ set to open on March 27, 2010 - was completed today when the last of the 94 roof panels was installed.
The panels extend from 120 feet from the facade over the entire seating bowl and curving down to the concourse. The final 60 feet of the panels are translucent, allowing natural light to enter into the bowl. Today marks the end of roof installation after the first panel was officially put in place on May 6, exactly six months ago.

The Red Bulls recently held a ceremony on Oct. 27 to mark the installation of the last piece of Kentucky Bluegrass sod in the stadium's new field. Currently, seats in the lower bowl are being installed and this process is expected to be completed by mid-December.

Red Bull Arena is situated on a 12.34 acre lot bounded by 6th Street to the west and Cape May Street to the south and east. The lot is owned by the Town of Harrison. However, the entire stadium construction process is being funded by Red Bull. In all, Red Bull Arena will have 25,000 seats, including 30 suites and 1,000 club seats.
Hello folks! I'm Liss Lovelace, I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I want to show you one of my sports passions: Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. They are the most popular club in Brazil. Other clubs envy them because of impressive 35 to 40 millions of fans. Their colors are red and black. I'd love to share you my Brazilian team. Now, my another passion is NY Red Bulls. I like New York City, I'd like to live in. I've ever dreamed of it, but my reality it's quite impossible. One day I'll be there to see the Reddies win some match. I can't afford much money, but so what? I can watch online NY Red Bulls and see their campaign. I wish they should have better scheme to play and better coach. One of my dreams is American champion soccer clubs must dispute Libertadores de America, like Mexican clubs do. Well, why not? Go Reddies, go!

New York Red Bulls midfielder Albert Celades has announced his retirement from professional soccer following the Red Bulls' 2009 season finale against Toronto FC at Giants Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 PM ET.

"It is time to say goodbye to soccer," Celades said. "I feel blessed to have been part of the most important teams in the world, and I want to thank everyone in the New York Red Bulls organization for giving me the opportunity to play in the United States and MLS. Now, for my family and I, it is time to go back home."

A veteran of the Spanish La Liga, Celades made his professional debut for FC Barcelona in 1995, and helped the Catalan giants to two La Liga and two Spanish Cup titles, as well as a the 1997-98 UEFA Super Cup championship, over his four-season tenure in Barcelona. He had similar success after joining Real Madrid in 2000, as the Spanish First Division powerhouse captured two La Liga titles during Celades' four campaigns with the team, while also winning the 2002 UEFA Champions League. Before coming to New York, he patrolled the midfield for Real Zaragoza, and was instrumental in the club's 2005 Spanish Super Cup finals appearance. Celades also played for French club, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, in the 2003-04 season.

On the international level, Celades earned four caps representing Spain, including two during the 1998 FIFA World Cup, in which he made two substitute appearances against Nigeria and Paraguay.

Celades, 34, signed with the Red Bulls on March 11, 2009, and appeared in 16 matches, making 13 starts for New York. He made his Red Bulls debut on April 11 away to the Houston Dynamo, and made first MLS start and recorded first MLS assist on May 8 in a 4-1 win against the San Jose Earthquakes at Giants Stadium. Celades scored his first MLS goal in 2-1 loss to Toronto FC on June 13 and tallied two assists on Aug. 23 in a 3-2 win over FC Dallas. His three assists rank him second on the team.

Sod installation begins at Red Bull Arena

HARRISON, NJ- The first pieces of sod were laid in place today at Red Bull Arena. The Kentucky Bluegrass field will be rolled out over the next week in preparation for the Red Bulls opening match of the 2010 MLS season on March 27, 2010, against the Chicago Fire.
The field installation is being handled by Landtek Group of Amityville, Long Island, leaders in athletic field construction for more than 20 years. Landtek will oversee installation of the pitch and have already overseen the installation of the cutting-edge underground field drainage and turf heating system.

The underground system, known as a SubAir System, will enable Red Bull Arena to fully control the field's moisture content and enable growth and temperature management for what will be a natural Kentucky bluegrass playing surface even during cold-weather months.

The SubAir System applies vacuum pressure to accelerate the speed at which moisture moves from the playing surface through the soil system. At the same time, the system can apply pressure through the subsoil pipes to stimulate moisture movement through the soil during particularly dry periods, as well as regulate the core temperature of the soil throughout the year to help stimulate grass growth.

Fans can watch the pitch installation via the web cam at www.redbullarena.us.

Other construction notes:

The installation of the final pieces of the dynamic form roof begin this week. Only the 13 panels over the West Building remain. The roof panels extend 120 feet from the facade over the seating bowl with the final 60 feet composed of translucent panels. These translucent panels will allow natural light to pass through into the bowl. In total, there will be 94 panels used to complete the Red Bull Arena roof. When completely installed, the roof will extend over the entire seating bowl and curve down to the concourse.

Red Bull Arena is set to be ready for the 2010 Major League Soccer season. The new soccer-specific stadium will have 25,000 seats, including 30 suites and 1,000 club seats. The stadium design incorporates a unique roof top, which will extend from the last seat to just over the touchlines, with 60 feet of the roof will be translucent in order to allow natural light to enter.
After watching Arsenal demolish Blackburn 6-2 at the Emirates Stadium and receiving a rousing reception, Henry is reportedly uninterested in an England return.

With reports in England and Spain full of stories regarding Manchester City striker Robinho moving to Barcelona, it is rumoured that the Catalan giants are willing to offer Henry as a make-weight to land the Brazilian as early as January.

However, Henry is reportedly uninterested in the potential move, as the New York Red Bulls are desperate to land the striker. Missing out on this year's MLS play-off's with star Juan Pablo Angel out injured, Henry is the American side's main target in the transfer window.

With friends David Beckham and Freddie Ljungberg already stars in the MLS, Henry is said to be thinking heavily of a North American move after the World Cup this summer.

Its been 14 years since we first started this tradition, the tailgating in lot 16A and the pregame song practice, beer drinking, domino playing and other shenanigans. Through out the years many have come and gone, but in the end we all at one time experience the comradeship of 16A.

Many of us met for the first time in that lot over beers and football talk, or shots of Jameson, or grilled food. Those experiences for many were the start of this long struggle together and we wouldn’t trade any of you shits for anything.

This next Saturday on October 24th ESC will be throwing a Adios to 16A Party for all ESC and friends of ESC. There will be kick ass DJ’ing from ESC’s resident DJ pros like The Offside Rules own Shawn Francis, and longtime ESC spinmaster Jamison and of course the longest tenured ESC member Mike Sansone.

Kegs and “RocktoberFest” food prepared by Chef Leon will be on provided for the supporters and friends as we celebrate the end of an era. The end of the hellhole known as Giants Stadium and the end of the crap given to us by the NJSEA.

SO come on out to the match and stop by 16A to help us say adios to this place as we prepare to meet up again for the first time in the new arena next season.

Date: October 24, 2009
Time: 1:00PM – 7:00PM

After Discussion With Red Bulls, Grant Takes Portsmouth Job

If Chelsea had won the Champions League final in Moscow in May 2008, Avram Grant might still be the coach of the Premier League club. But the Blues lost in a penalty shootout and Grant was out at Stamford Bridge.

On Wednesday, Grant, a 54-year-old Israeli, accepted the job as director of football at struggling Portsmouth of the English Premier League.

Grant’s decision to take the management post in the south of England came after more than a month of discussions with Red Bull about becoming the sporting director and coach of the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, according to the agent who represents Grant in the United States.

“Grant would make history in New York based on the demographics of the area,” Don Barnett, Grant’s agent, said in a telephone interview from Munich on Wednesday. “With all the Jewish residents and expat Israelis in the area, coupled with his profile at Chelsea, he would have raised the profile of Red Bull to a higher level on and off the field — and helped to sell tickets and attract players. He wants the job, but I guess he couldn’t wait on them any longer.”

The Red Bulls have been playing under an interim coach, Richie Williams, since Juan Carlos Osorio resigned in late August. The combination of Osorio and Jeff Agoos, the club’s sporting director, never seemed to click as the former coach struggled to sign the players he preferred, but was often pre-empted by Agoos and others in the club’s hierarchy. Erik Stover, the club’s managing director, said that Agoos would be replaced and that his successor could hold both the coaching position and director post.

Earlier this week Red Bull officials in Salzburg introduced Dietmar Beiersdorfer as its new head of sport, “a new football boss, in both Salzburg and beyond,” the team said in a statement.

Before hiring Beiersdorfer, Markus Egger had been in charge of all soccer operations, a portfolio that includes Red Bull Salzburg (the defending champion in the Austrian Bundesliga), the New York Red Bulls (who will finish with the worst record in M.L.S. this season), a fifth-division club in Leipzig, Germany; and academies in Ghana and Brazil. It is not clear whether Egger will retain his current position, be reassigned or leave Red Bull.

According to Barnett, Grant met Egger in Israel in late August before the Champions League qualifying match between Maccabi Haifa and Red Bull Salzburg. The two had a “spirited conversation over a couple of hours.”

Early in September, Egger traveled to New York to meet with local Red Bull officials, but declined to meet with any representatives of the news media. On Wednesday, Barnett said he could not reach Egger on his cell phone or at his office. During a call to Red Bull offices in Salzburg, a reporter was told that Egger would not be in the office until Thursday. An e-mail message to a Red Bulls official in New Jersey seeking help in speaking with an official in Austria was met with a one sentence response: “They don’t do interviews.”

Grant’s agent asserts that his client is seeking the same authority enjoyed by Bruce Arena in Los Angeles, where the former U.S. national team coach is both the coach and general manager. In addition, Barnett said that Grant was keen to sign a three-year contract with the Red Bulls that would pay him $2 million a year (plus incentives), adding that New York is the only M.L.S. destination that interested Grant. Grant had expressed an interest in coming to the United States after the MetroStars fired Bob Bradley, according to Barnett, but was rebuffed by the club’s top official at the time, Alexi Lalas, who hired Mo Johnston.

Grant decided to take the position with Portsmouth when Red Bull would not offer him the job, his agent said. Grant, who was also pursued by Wigan Athletic, Poland and Israel to become their coach, prefers a spot on the bench to a spot in a luxury suite. And he would still consider an offer to run the Red Bulls as the team prepares to move into a new stadium for the 2010 M.L.S. season if the job was offered to him.

COUNDOUL CALLED UP BY SENEGAL
October 6, 2009 by Red Bulls Reader
Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul has been called up to the Senegalese National Team for their friendly against South Korea in Seoul on Oct. 14. As a result, Coundoul will not be available for the Red Bulls’ Oct. 14 tilt against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium at 10:00 PM ET (TV: ESPN2, ESPN Deportes; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). Coundoul will leave the Red Bulls on Wednesday, Oct. 7 to join the squad, which is training in Paris, France.

Coundoul was signed by New York on June 29, 2009, after his rights were acquired from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money.
WOLYNIEC AND GOLDTHWAITE TO UNDERGO SEASON ENDING SURGERY
October 5, 2009 by Red Bulls Reader
The club announced today that forward John Wolyniec and defender Kevin Goldthwaite will undergo season-ending surgeries this week.

Wolyniec will undergo right ankle surgery Tuesday, Oct. 6, to remove two bone chips. The procedure will be performed by Dr. David Levine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY. Wolyniec sustained the injury after scoring a game-tying goal in New York’s 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution on Sept. 18. He is expected to miss six weeks. Second all-time in club history in games played with 138, Wolyniec, 32, has scored two goals and an assist in 20 appearances – eight of which were starts – this season.

Goldthwaite will have a left adductor release procedure performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia, PA, this Wednesday, Oct. 7. His recovery time is expected to be three to eight weeks. Goldthwaite, 26, was acquired from Toronto FC in the middle of the 2007 season and has started in 17 games for the Red Bulls in 2009. He was New York’s 2008 Defender of the Year after playing in a career-high 28 games and tallying two goals and two assists.

Red Bulls Name Sporting Director … in Austria

The overhaul of the Red Bulls has begun … in Austria.

Early Tuesday, in a communique from Salzburg, the energy-drink company that owns clubs in three countries and academies in two said it had named the German Dietmar Beiersdorfer as its head of sport. He will be responsible for the flagship club, Red Bull Salzburg (the defending Austrian Bundesliga champion), the New York Red Bulls, RB Leipzig (a club in the fifth tier of German soccer) and academies in Ghana and Brazil.

Beiersdorfer, 45, has spent the past seven years as the sporting director (think general manager) of SV Hamburg of the German Bundesliga. Beiersdorfer ended his relationship with Hamburg in June. He was introduced on Monday during a news conference at Red Bull’s Hangar-7, a terminal at the Salzburg airport in which the founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz, displays his collection of vintage automobiles and aircraft. Beiersdorfer replaced Markus Egger, who the company said will be reassigned to a different management job.

At this point, it is unclear what Beiersdorfer’s role will be with the Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, a team whose coach, Juan Carlos Osorio, resigned last month as the club limped toward the finish of the season with the league’s worst record. The announcement also leaves the future of the team’s current sporting director, Jeff Agoos, and interim coach, Richie Williams, unaddressed.

In fact, a club official said the New York branch was caught by surprise Tuesday morning when it received a news release from Austria with details of Beiersdorfer’s hiring.

“This is a very appealing role for me that also has a lot of potential,” Beirsdorfer said in a statement. “Red Bull Salzburg took a really important step in their development by qualifying for the Europa League. The job now is to continually carry this development forward. The same applies for all Red Bull football projects as one of my biggest tasks at Red Bull will be developing their global engagement in football.”

Red Bull has been conducting a search for a coach for its M.L.S. team. According to an agent for a high-profile European coach, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of jeopardizing future negotiations, the brain trust in Salzburg was delaying any announcement of a new coach in New York pending the resolution of internal issues.

Last weekend at Chivas, Juan Pablo Angel’s equalizer late in the match not only allowed the Red Bulls to take a road point, but moved the Colombian past Clint Mathis for the franchise’s goal scored record in all competitions. Angel has tallied 46 goals in 78 matches for the Red Bulls. Mathis scored 46 goals in 110 matches. The MLS match was a 4-1 thrashing on May 8 at Giants Stadium. That a four match unbeaten streak against San Jose. New York is also looking to extend its unbeaten streak to three games as the club plays its second of three straight road matches against Western Conference opponents.
Chirgadze relishes opportunity with Red Bulls

Chirgadze relishes opportunity with Red Bulls
Georgia native becomes first homegrown player signed by New York

MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Even before he arrived in the USA from his native Georgia, Giorgi Chirgadze had the dream of playing professional soccer. That dream has become a reality for the Brooklyn, N.Y. resident, who became the first Homegrown player signed by the New York Red Bulls.

"It's a great opportunity to be here," he said. "I always wanted to be a professional soccer player since I was little and Red Bull gave me this chance to be here with to work with professionals like Juan Pablo [Angel] and I'm really excited."

But when Chirgadze makes his Major League Soccer debut is unknown.

"I think he's a very talented kid who I think is ready to take on the new challenge," Red Bulls sporting director Jeff Agoos said. "He's been with the academy system for four or five years, he understands the club. Bob Montgomery and his staff have done an incredible job preparing him to get in this position. We felt he was ready to take on that next step. We believe in the course of one, two, three years he can see first-team time in MLS games."

According to MLS rules, Chirgadze will not count against the Red Bulls roster and is ineligible to compete for the team in the 2009 season. He can continue to train with the first team and could step on the field as early as next year.

"I think Giorgi is good enough athletically, he's got a very sweet left foot," said Montgomery, the Red Bulls director of youth development. "He was very versatile as a player. We played him up front with our academy program, he's played as a wide left-sided player and actually last two years we've used him as a left back on occasion when we've had some shortcomings due to injury."

Montgomery has also been impressed with the 18-year-old's attributes off the field.

"He's a good learner, he listens, he works hard and those factors are probably just as important as the technical and tactical ability of a player," he said.

Chirgadze, who lists Ronaldinho and Cristiano Ronaldo as his two favorite players, moved to the U.S. in 2003 with his mother and two sisters. They joined his father and lived in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where he competed for a Russian amateur team.

It was there that he was first discovered by Columbus Crew goalkeeping coach Vadim Kirillov, who was the MetroStars Academy goalkeeping coach at the time. Kirillov invited Chirgadze to try out with the under-15s.

That's when Chirgadze believed his dream was attainable, although the commute from Brooklyn to East Rutherford was taxing.

"It was hard from the start," he said. "It takes 2-1/2 hours for me to get to the stadium, buses and trains."

Chirgadze has been in the Red Bulls Academy since 2005 and most recently he led the under-20s to the Super-20 National Championship, scoring a pair of goals. He also captained the U-17 team that defeated Inter Milan 3-1, on Aug. 23, 2008, also scoring a brace in that game.

"I've been impressed. I like Giorgi, I like his attitude," Red Bulls interim coach Richie Williams said. "He's down to training early, he stays around, he's working hard and he's a talented player. The thing that he's lacking is experience, especially as a professional player. He needs to gain that now."

Chirgadze can play as a forward, but he said his best position is as an attacking left-sided midfielder. When he gets to display those skills in an MLS game, Agoos said, is up to Chirgadze.

Having taken a tour of Red Bull Arena, the team's home for the 2010 season and beyond, Chirgadze hopes that is sooner than later.

"My goal for now is to work as hard as I can and to be on the field as soon as I can," he said. "It actually depends on me and how hard I work. If I work hard, it pays back."

Beckham, M.L.S. and Montreal

Beckham, M.L.S. and Montreal

By JACK BELL
David Beckham speaks English, a bit of Spanish and a smattering of Italian. And soon, perhaps, French.

As part of his five-year deal with Major League Soccer and the Los Angeles Galaxy, Beckham’s contract includes a clause that enables him to operate a team, or part of a team, in M.L.S. as early as the 2012 season.

“I have the right to own an M.L.S. franchise, which I will action immediately after I have stopped playing,” Beckham told the BBC.

M.L.S. will add one team in 2010 (the Philadelphia Union) and two in 2011 (the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers). League officials have said they would like to expand, to 20 teams, perhaps as early as 2012, and it is increasingly likely that Montreal will get the 19th team.

According to a person with knowledge of Beckham’s planning who spoke on condition of anonymity because of concern about jeopardizing a potential deal, Beckham, 34, and his management team at 19 Entertainment (led by Simon Fuller) and Creative Artists Agency (led by Jeff Frasco) are interested in being partners with Joey Saputo, the owner of the Montreal Impact. The Impact plays in the United Soccer Leagues First Division, one tier down from M.L.S.

Other than confirming that he has been approached by a group of potential partners, Saputo declined to speak in anything other than general terms about his long-running efforts to obtain an M.L.S. team in Montreal.

“I can say yes, we were approached about two months ago, but I can’t say by whom,” Saputo said in a telephone interview late last week. “I think Montreal would be a great candidate to be the 19th team in M.L.S. no matter who’s involved.”

Beckham is in England, where the national team is scheduled to play Croatia in a World Cup qualifier Wednesday in London.

Montreal has been a part of the M.L.S. expansion discussion for several years. Saputo was among the bidders for one of two teams last November, but ended up on the sideline. The city has a long soccer history that dates to Le Manic in the North American Soccer League. In the past year, Montreal hosted a Concacaf Champions League match that attracted 55,000 to Olympic Stadium, and a French Cup match that attracted 35,000 in July.

The stumbling block, in the view of M.L.S., is the limited seating capacity (13,000) at Stade Saputo. Now, the club, city and province are nearing a deal in which Quebec would provide more than $20 million to expand the stadium.

“While we have recently had preliminary discussions with the Saputo family about future M.L.S. expansion into Montreal, we have not had any discussions with David Beckham or his representatives regarding ownership of an expansion team in Montreal,” Dan Courtemanche, the league’s senior vice president for marketing and communications, said in an e-mail message. “Commissioner Don Garber and President Mark Abbott expect to travel to Montreal prior to the end of the year to discuss expansion with Joey Saputo. However, M.L.S. has not yet set a timetable for expansion beyond Portland and Vancouver’s entry into the league in 2011.”

It is reasonable to assume that Montreal, with or without the Beckham group, is likely to be the league’s 19th team. Like Vancouver and Portland (and Seattle this year), Montreal would not be an expansion team in the strict sense of the term. And perhaps that is what has attracted Beckham.

For its part, M.L.S. and Garber have publicly stated that they would like a second team in the New York area. Garber once spoke about a club run by the family of Fred Wilpon, the principal owner of the Mets. But the Wilpons lost millions in the Ponzi scheme run by Bernard L. Madoff and are now believed to be out of the picture. The league probably now imagines a 20th team in New York associated with Beckham, but he may have other ideas.

Selecting next coach a tough decision for NY Red Bulls

Interim New York Red Bulls head coach Richie Williams looks on during his team's game against the Columbus Crew at Giants Stadium on Sunday.

The problem with foreign ownership is a simple one: Do they really understand how MLS works, the limitations of a salary cap and draft as the main way of acquiring talent?
If yes, and indications from Red Bulls managing director Erik Stover are that they do, the real question should be: "Is it really necessary to bring in a big-name coach just because of the spotlight of the New York market and the need to fill seats in a new stadium, or is it better to go with a no-name coach (to them) who is MLS savvy, has the respect of the team, has the team playing well and is not going to insist on a huge say in bringing in talent?''

It's not an easy call.

If they choose the latter, Richie Williams has a lot going for him. He is considered one of the top assistant coaches in the league and would be high on any team's list if a job came open. And if ownership did their homework, they would see that a number of assistants have made a successful transition, including Robert Warzycha of the Crew and Denis Hamlett of the Fire, whose teams are 1-2, respectively, in the Eastern Conference.

Williams would likely trade major decision-making for a shot at the head job, although any coach would want some sort of say in bringing in players.

The list of big-name coaches who are familiar with the ins and outs of MLS is a short one. But if that's the choice then the perfect candidate is Juergen Klinsmann. And then you would be able to keep Williams as an assistant, much like the Galaxy did last year with Cobi Jones when Ruud Gullit was hired.

And even though Klinsmann is way ahead of Gullit in understanding MLS, he's probably not the type to be criss-crossing the country scouting college talent in the offseason, which would increase Williams' value to the franchise.

There is also a third choice, an internationally recognizable name who has been involved with MLS from the very beginning: John Harkes. This is a job Harkes felt he was being groomed for when he was an assistant under Bruce Arena, but was caught in the ugly divorce between Arena and the Red Bulls in 2007 and never got the chance.

The problem with Harkes is he has no head-coaching experience and he would be learning on the job in a very critical year. So if that's too big a risk, then the best choice would be Williams.

The franchise could certainly do a lot worse. Come to think of it, it has.

TROPHY TIME

You can't blame Red Bulls fans if they don't know who to root against tomorrow night when D.C. United and the Seattle Sounders meet in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final at RFK Stadium.

One team is the Red Bulls' most hated rival and the most successful franchise in MLS history, while the other is an upstart expansion team that whipped the Red Bulls in their league debut in March and has a chance to win a championship in their first year, something the Red Bulls have yet to do in 14 years.

D.C. United (7-5-11) and the Sounders (8-6-10) have only met once this season, a 3-3 tie June 17 in Seattle, a game D.C. earned the point with thanks to an own goal with three minutes to play. They will also play a regular-season game Sept. 12 in Washington.

CRUNCH TIME

There are 34 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday (including Brazil at Argentina), six more on Sunday, and another 35 on Sept. 9. At that point, the World Cup picture will have a definitive focus.

And that includes the U.S. national team, which can erase the disappointment from Mexico City and ease many a fear with a victory over El Salvador Saturday night in Sandy, Utah, and come away with at least a point from the game in Trinidad next week.

Juan Carlos Osorio steps down as RBNY coach

RED BULLS ANNOUNCE THE RESIGNATION OF JUAN CARLOS OSORIO

The Red Bulls announced today that head coach Juan Carlos Osorio has resigned from his position, effective immediately. The team also announced that assistant coach Richie Williams will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2009 season. The search process for a new head coach will begin immediately.

“It has been a difficult season for Juan Carlos and he felt that it was in the best interest of the team to step aside,” said Red Bulls Managing Director Erik Stover. “I want to personally thank Juan Carlos for his efforts with the Red Bulls organization. It was under his leadership last season that the team won the Western Conference Championship and reached the MLS Cup Final for the first time in franchise history. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

“I want to apologize to the fans for the results this season,” said Osorio. “I want to thank the players for their hard work. I would also like to thank the club for the opportunity to coach the team for the past two seasons.”

Williams, 39, takes over as interim head coach for the second time in his career. Currently in his fourth season as an assistant coach with New York, Williams also served as the Red Bulls interim head coach from June 27-Aug. 12, 2006, taking over for Mo Johnston. Williams went 4-3-2 over that stretch.

Osorio joined the Red Bulls as head coach on December 18, 2007. In his two seasons, he led the team to a 12-27-13 record and an appearance in the 2008 MLS Cup Final.

The Red Bulls next match is Sunday, August 23 when they host FC Dallas at 3 p.m. at Giants Stadium (TV: MSG, Telefutura; Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).

Juan Carlos Osorio to be Sacked?

We received this earlier today. Not surprisingly it would appear Juan Carlos Osorio's days probably can be counted on one hand.

Quote

Hello,

You should know me from some other rumors I gave you regarding players RBNY was looking at years before they came to the team. (Ernst Öbster).

I am now telling you that I have heard from a good authority that Juan Carlos Osorio and RBNY have received word from Austria that he is to be replaced following the poor result in the CONCACAF Champions League.

In Austria it was said that Juan Carlos Osorio's only hope to remain employed was a good showing and deep run in your Champions League. Osorio himself was told this in person.

You should keep your eyes open for a new coach/manager. Red Bull does not want to appoint an interim but rather have a direct replacement for Osorio before he goes.

So do with that what you will.

As always, I am preferring to remain anonymous and I know you honor that.

Additionally Sports Illustrated's Truth and Rumors and the NY Post add:

Quote

The Red Bulls may have nine games left on their schedule, but their season is over, pronounced dead last night at Giants Stadium. It was killed by a 2-1 loss to W Connection in the CONCACAF Champions League prelims, a dismal collapse that likely will cost coach Juan Carlos Osorio his job.

NY Red Bulls vs W Connection

RED BULLS LOOK TO ADVANCE IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: After earning a tough, 2-2 draw in Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago last Thursday, the New York Red Bulls hope to advance into the group stage of the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League when they host W Connection at Giants Stadium on Wednesday at 8:00 PM ET (TV: Fox Soccer Channel; Radio: WADO 1280 AM) in the second leg of the teams' aggregate goal Preliminary Round series.
The Red Bulls scored two vital away goals, with New York getting on the board through newcomer Ernst Oebster and a second half own goal. In this round, the team that scores the most goals between the home-and-home matches advances to the Group Stage, where they face Pumas UNAM (Mexico), Comunicaciones (Guatemala) and the winner of the Liberia (Costa Rica) and Real Espana (Honduras) series.

The Red Bulls qualified for the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League after they were a finalist in the 2008 MLS Cup. The winner of the two-game aggregate goals series will qualify for Group D in the Group Stage. W Connection qualified for the Champions League after winning the Caribbean Football Union Championship in 2009 by defeating the Puerto Rico Islanders, 2-1, in the final. Last season, W Connection, coached by Stuart Charles Fevrier, finished in second place with a 22-6-4 record (59 pts.).

Red Bulls release struggling Smith

Bermuda international Khano Smith has been cast into the footballing wilderness after having his contract cancelled by struggling MLS team New York Red Bulls.

The 28-year-old failed to make an impression at Giants Stadium, making only eight first team appearances following a move from Seattle Sounders at the start of the season.

Smith arrived at the Big Apple-based club with plenty of promise having impressed Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osario while playing for New England Revolution.

But after a string of uninspiring performances the ex-Dandy Town player was shunted onto the club's non-protected players list last month, giving Red Bulls the power to waiver his contract at any time.

It leaves him facing an uncertain future at the professional level with a return to Revolution seeming unlikely considering Steve Nicol's side are well-stocked in Smith's position with Kenny Mansally particularly impressing on the left wing this term.

A frustrated Smith voiced his discontent at being dropped from Red Bulls' starting line-up back in May and admitted that Osario had spoken to him about his inconsistent form, but refused to expand on their conversation.

"I just come here and try to do my best," said Smith. "I'm not playing, of course I'm not happy.

"We discussed it. I don't want to talk about it. You can ask him. Maybe he'll want to tell you.

"But he told me the reason for it last week. I'll keep that between him and me. If he wants to tell you, he can tell you.'"

In an exclusive interview with The Royal Gazette earlier this season Osario demanded more from his under-performing winger.

He said: "He's still not the Khano that I think he can be. In isolated situations he needs to take his defender one-on-one and produce more for us when we are attacking.

"As an individual player we need to find a little more from him particularly in the attacking third."

Smith finished on the wrong end in two successive MLS Cup finals at New England Revolution during his four year-stint at the Boston-based outfit.

From there he joined MLS new-boys Sounders where he spent a few weeks during pre-season before signing a lucrative $120,000 a-year contract with Red Bulls, who are currently bottom of the Eastern Conference.

From Red Bulls official website:

Quote

SECAUCUS, NJ- Red Bull New York announced today that it has waived midfielder Khano Smith.
Smith, 28, has played in eight games this season for New York, starting in six. He was signed by the Red Bulls during the off-season on February 12 from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for allocation money. The Bermudian made his Red Bulls debut on March 28 vs. New England at Giants Stadium, and provided the cross that caused a Revolution own goal in the 1-1 draw.
